Would VfB Stuttgart be competitive with the previous team in the Bundesliga? There are considerable doubts about this. Sports director Sven Mislintat is therefore looking for newcomers – and faces many unanswered questions.

Stuttgart – The Grand Bazaar has been open since last week. With the 6-0 win in Nuremberg and the Hamburg last-minute loss in Heidenheim, VfB Stuttgart’s return to the Bundesliga was perfect (almost) before the final 1-3 loss to Darmstadt 98. With this certainty, sports director Sven Mislintat was able to immediately start planning the new season. He should have a lot to do in the next few weeks.

First there is the question of the whereabouts of previously borrowed players. The biggest chunk is the negotiations with Gregor Kobel (22) – his adviser, the former VfB professional Philipp Degen, already presented at the office on Friday. VfB would like to firmly commit the goalkeeper from Switzerland borrowed from TSG Hoffenheim – but Kobel has also sparked the interest of many other clubs.

It would be easier to reach an agreement with Pascal Stenzel (24), who was loaned by SC Freiburg, while it depends on Liverpool’s plans whether central defender Nat Philipps (23) will stay in Stuttgart for a year. For the time being, it is also unclear what happens to the professionals that VfB has lent to other clubs, including Erik Thommy (25). Fortuna Düsseldorf actually wanted to commit the offensive man firmly – after the relegation of the Rhinelander, the cards are shuffled again.

Tim Leibold returns from Hamburger SV?

Regardless of this, VfB will (have to) commit new players. Mislintat said during the Corona break that his team could keep up in the Bundesliga if the worst comes to the worst. With the previous squad, the experts agree, VfB would hardly be competitive. The first possible new additions are already being traded. Tim Leibold (26) from Hamburger SV is considered a hot candidate for the left defense. Born in Böblingen, the best provider of the second division, he played in the youth team and in the second team before he made his breakthrough at 1. FC Nürnberg. He could well imagine a return to Stuttgart.

VfB is looking for a goal scorer

There is also a need for action by storm. The time of Mario Gomez (34) is over; Sasa Kalajdzic (22) is inexperienced and was injured for a long time; it is uncertain whether Hamadi Al Ghaddioui (29) claims to the Bundesliga are sufficient. VfB had already missed a top scorer in the second division. Whether Joel Pohjanpalo (25), recently loaned to HSV by Bayer Leverkusen, could solve the problems? The interest in Waldemar Anton (23) from Hannover 96, who could strengthen both the central defense and the defensive midfield, is no secret. The problem: the Uzbek-born is not on the long list of the Lower Saxony. Means: For less than five million euros, it should hardly be available.

What might have sounded like a bargain before the Corona crisis could now be too much. VfB will not be able to make big leaps in the transfer market, especially as it is still uncertain when viewer revenues can be expected again. Unless the sale of your own players washes fresh money into the empty coffers. Nicolas Gonzalez (22) and Orel Mangala (22) are particularly interested in the international market.
