COLUMBUS, Ohio – Virginia five-star defender at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia has committed to North Carolina.
Grimes was ranked the nation’s best cornerback and number 7, opting for the Tar Heels over Ohio State, Georgia and Texas A&M head coach Mack Brown added Grimes as his 17th engagement in a class that is fourth and fourth in the country ACC took second place behind Clemson.
He is not only the highest player in the class, but also the fourth recruit to be classified as a five-star player for Chapel Hill. He joined the defensive duel against Marvin Austin and wide receiver Dwight Jones in 2007 and Donte Moss’s defensive end in 2009.If he had chosen the Buckeyes, it would have been the second time in the past five years that the OSU 2017 with Jeff Okudah would have landed No. 1 cornerback in the country. This year they landed in Shaun Wade, the second largest cornerback in the country.
The state of Ohio continues to fight for the highly rated recruitment class of all time. The Buckeyes still have commitments from four defenders – three cornerbacks – and are up to date despite losing three-star Ohio cornerback Devonta Smith to Alabama.
Grimes was one of six Virginia players with an Ohio state bid and the third to get off the board. TreVeyon Henderson, who ran back with five stars, chose the OSU even though he had never visited campus while three-star linebacker Bryce Steele got involved in South Carolina. The Buckeyes could get another player out of the state with five-star attacking lineman Tristan Leigh, who included OSU in their top 15 in May.
The state of Ohio will have another chance on Friday to bring its class back on 19 commits when four-star cornerback Jamier Johnson makes his decision between the OSU and six other schools.
