Timo Werner on transfer talks with the manager who convinced him to switch to Chelsea despite Liverpool’s connections

Timo Werner has revealed what convinced him to switch to Chelsea, despite having been closely associated with newly crowned Premier League champion Liverpool in recent months.

The striker was expected to move from RB Leipzig to Anfield, but the Reds never made an offer for the German international despite their reported interest, leaving Chelsea free to activate the 24-year-old’s release clause.

Speaking to BILD, quoted by TEAMtalk, Werner announced that his transfer talks with blues boss Frank Lampard persuaded him to complete the move to Stamford Bridge after he indicated that he had previously decided to stay with Leipzig.

“The discussions with those responsible at Chelsea were so good that I ultimately chose Chelsea,” said Werner. “The coach in particular stood behind me and really wanted me to know that I was going to Chelsea so that I would feel as comfortable as here.

“In conversations with me, the trainer often emphasized how much he wanted me, how much he valued me as a person.

“Of course it is difficult to give up an oasis of wellbeing like I have had in Leipzig for years, but you can only make a career if you take the next step.

“Otherwise I always stay in Leipzig, this season was the crossroads. I have decided on something new and hope that it will continue like this. “
