The multicultural club and association “Yaam” at Ostbahnhof fears for its existence. The main building was sealed last Friday by the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg building authority.
According to their own statements, the operators only had a few hours to clear offices and interiors. The background is an expert opinion commissioned by the district office in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, which classifies the statics of the bank wall along the Spree as in danger of collapse.
According to the operators of the Yaam, the official sealing of the hall was orally justified by the fact that the building is less than five meters from the wall. So far there is no written justification for the sealing.
The district office in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg says that the report has been available since last week and recommends that the strip be blocked immediately. Since the hall is only 2.90 meters from the bank, the building authority blocked it as a precaution.
A test structural engineer should now determine as quickly as possible whether a partial or complete reopening of the hall is possible. If so, the block would be lifted immediately. Otherwise, the outcome of an already commissioned report on the building statics would have to be awaited.
The operators of the Yaam are now finally afraid of their existence after a corona-related closure of several months. This means that indoor operation is not possible even after the corona period and outdoor operation is also severely restricted.

At the same time, the operators accuse the district office of delaying renovation of the wall – the condition of which had been known for years.
The Yaam, which has been organizing cultural events and parties for 25 years, moved to the location at Ostbahnhof five years ago. The operators had to leave the previous location a few hundred meters further in favor of a new building project.
According to their own statements, the operators have since invested almost one million euros in the expansion of the new location, where the club “Maria am Ostbahnhof” had previously been located.
