The corona crisis dramatically exacerbated the tense economic situation at Schalke!

And the Pott Club is responding! According to information from the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the table twelfth is the first Bundesliga club to introduce an upper salary limit of EUR 2.5 million.

Schalke did not deny the savings plan on BILD demand!

Fact: The club is financially back-to-wall. The liabilities amount to almost EUR 200 million. CFO Peter Peters (58) already spoke of a “potentially existential situation.” Because Schalke lived and lives above his means.

With personnel expenses of around 124 million euros, the club is in fifth place in the Bundesliga in the 2019/2020 season behind Bayern Dortmund, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg. Top earners are Benjamin Stambouli and Amine Harit with around four million euros annually.

In the future, Schalke will no longer have a player contract that exceeds an annual salary of around EUR 2.5 million. Whoever demands more is not obliged.

The first new signing for the coming season is well below the salary limit and is also not a player. After the worst second half of the club’s history, sports director Jochen Schneider (49) brought Werner Leuthard (58 / recently Hertha) back in the summer. The condition trainer knows royal blue very well: From 2009 to 2011, the “grinder” under Felix Magath (66) made Schalke’s stars sweat.
