“Never seen anything like” Matt Rowell dominate as Gold Coast Suns

It is fitting that Matt Rowell plays for the Suns because he is the hottest talent in the AFL.

Last year’s # 1 draft pick wasted no time making a name for itself in senior footy, and it stood again in Gold Coast’s 10.4 (64) to 8.3 (51) win over Fremantle on Saturday night in flames.

Rowell is a big reason why the Suns are in second place in the leaderboard and have won all three games since the restart of the season after the Coronavirus break.

The teenager has scored two goals and scored at least 20 goals in each of his last three games. He has now made a name for himself on the Brownlow Medal betting market.

He is the fourth favorite to win the league’s best player award. If the midfielder can compete against weapon opponents like Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood this weekend against Geelong, his star will only rise.

Port Adelaide legend, Kane Cornes, said the teams give Rowell too much space and don’t show him the respect he deserves. However, it may be tagged soon as other sites acknowledge the damage it can cause.

“Obviously, he doesn’t have the opposition respect he’ll get. You saw that goal back then, there was no opposition near it, ”said Cornes at the Sunday footy show.

“The next challenge for him will be the label. How will he deal with it? “

The great Essendon-Matthew Lloyd said if he was in Geelong he would send Cameron Guthrie to mark Rowell while praising the 18-year-old sensation more.

“Matthew Rowell, he’s the story. I know that everyone is probably tired of hearing everyone say, “Rowell, Rowell, Rowell,” but he could have had nine (Brownlow) votes in the past three weeks, “said Lloyd.

“I didn’t expect him to be the goalkicker he became. He kicks two every week.

“If he can get up in Geelong this weekend and be back in the top two or three, you would say that it is quite difficult to stop him.

“We have never seen anything like it. He is in the top 5 of Brownlow’s favor, which is unknown (to a rookie player). “

Nothing stopped Rowell against Fremantle – not even a rival’s cheeky act. The Suns star wears his shorts and pokes his Guernsey, and Dockers player Matt Taberner thought he would try to unsettle Rowell by messing up his look.

Unfortunately, it didn’t do anything for Western Australians to limit Rowell’s effectiveness.
