Mikel Arteta explains how Arsenal plans to use Cedric Soares and compares Hector Bellerin

Mikel Arteta says that Cedric Soares is ready to have a significant impact on Arsenal after regaining full physical fitness.

The Portuguese international initially joined the Gunners on loan in the January transfer window, but leg and face injuries prevented him from making his debut.

But the former Southampton defender, who has now signed a four-year contract to stay permanently in the club, is vying to face Norwich on Wednesday night.

And Arteta praised Cedric’s technical quality, admitting that the 28-year-old made the best decision by taking one of Arsenal’s current full-backs – even first-choice right-back Hector Bellerin.

“It’s a different quality in the quarterback area than we have,” Arteta said in her pre-match press conference.

“He is a gifted and technical player and is probably the best we have in the last third to make the right decision and attack the box too.”

Arteta also added that Cedric offers him the luxury of using different systems, with the defender equally skilled at playing as an orthodox full back in four, or as a winger.

“He can play four or five, he is a really good player with experience in the Premier League who can help us.”

Cedric admitted last week that he was frustrated with injuries that have so far prevented him from playing for Arsenal.

Publishing on Twitter, he wrote: “I am delighted to announce that I have signed a long-term agreement to stay at Arsenal.

“I’ve been really frustrated with the way injuries have kept me off the pitch so far, but I’m working as hard as I can to get back as soon as possible. Thanks to everyone who supported me. Come on, Gunners!”
