Mets announce 60-man pool before summer training

The Mets have announced the names of the 45 players who will form their first player pool for the shortened 2020 season.

The group comprises 34 members of the 40-man roster (Noah Syndergaard was put on the 45-day injured list after he recovered from Tommy John’s surgery) and 11 non-cadre invitees.

40 man jugs Stephen Gonsalves, Jordan Humphreys, Franklyn Kilome, and Thomas Szapucki were not included in the original list.

The summer camp officially begins on Wednesday July 1st at Citi Field. Players from both groups who don’t break the opening roster are sent to MCU Park on Coney Island, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, to stay fresh.

Below are the non-squad players who join the pool. While the total limit is 60 players, teams can add more if necessary.

Jugs (3): David Peterson, Chasen Shreve, Kevin Smith

Catcher (2): Patrick Mazeika, Rene Rivera

Infielders (3): Matt Adams, Max Moroff, Eduardo Nunez

Outfielder (2): Johneshwy Fargas, Jarrett Parker

Intrasquad games and workouts will be plentiful in the pool during the season, but games between teams from different organizations are not allowed.

With the likely cancellation of the minor league season, including a farm worker in the pool, the only way to guarantee him direct instruction from coaches this year.

An expanded Arizona Fall League or similar setup may be implemented in Florida over the next few months, but some teams have been inclined to include their best prospects – the Mets haven’t taken in any of their big fish – to make sure they win to have. ‘Don’t miss an entire year of development.

Veterans like Adams, Nunez and Rivera have a huge chance to contribute this season, and may even have a chance to crack the 30-man squad on the opening day.

Shreve, a left-hander, and Fargas, a fast outfielder, offer unique skills that could be useful across the board.

Mazeika, Peterson and Smith are the only three domestic players to be on the first list.

It should be noted that the Mets are not tied to this particular group of players for the entire 2020 season. Trades, waivers, and free hand work just like in a normal year (with the exception that only pool players can be traded).

The only way to remove a healthy non-40-man player from the pool is to act or release him. It can be re-signed, but a released player cannot be added to the pool again.

Likewise, a 40-member player who cancels waivers and is excluded from the squad cannot be added to the pool again.

That said, the most flexible players are those with remaining options for smaller leagues. Like jugs Robert Gsellman, Paul Sewald, and Daniel Zamora They can go in and out of the active roster without having to go through waivers where they are either used by another team or directly against minors and are not considered eligible to return to the pool.

It should also be made clear that the group of 60 players should be referred to as the “player pool”. The term “taxi roster”, which has been incorrectly used interchangeably with the pool, actually refers to the three players (one catcher) who can travel out of the pool and with the Major League team to serve as a replacement for injuries without being added to the active roster.

All players will be in New York by Wednesday. The first training with a full squad is planned for Friday, July 3rd. The two-day buffer enables the proper execution of COVID tests for players, coaches and support staff.
