Lewis Hamilton: ‘Sad and Disappointing’ to read Ecclestone comments

The six-time world champion first wrote: “Damn, I just don’t even know where to start with this one.” Hamilton later called Ecclestone’s comments both “ignorant” and “uneducated”.

Ecclestone drove Formula 1 for about 40 years before he was replaced as Managing Director in 2017.

“Bernie is out of sports and another generation, but that is wrong – ignorant and illiterate comments that show us how far we as a society have to go before real equality can be achieved,” wrote Hamilton.

“It now makes perfect sense to me that nothing has been said or done to make our sport more diverse or to combat the racist abuse that I have received during my career.

“If someone who has been doing sports for decades has so little understanding of the depth [sic] Routing problems that we as blacks deal with every day, how can we expect all people who work under him to understand. It starts at the top.

“Now is the time for change. I will not stop pushing for an inclusive future for our sport with equal opportunities for all.

“To create a world that offers equal opportunities for minorities. I will continue to use my voice to represent those who do not have one and to speak for those who are underrepresented to provide an opportunity in ours To have sport. “

Formula 1 statement

Before Hamilton went on social media, Formula 1 said in a statement that it “completely contradicted Bernie Ecclestone’s comments, which have no place in Formula 1 or in society.” It added that his title as emeritus chairman had expired in early 2020.
Ecclestone – no stranger to controversy – made the remark when discussing a commission set up by Hamilton to increase diversity in sport.

“I don’t think Formula 1 will do anything bad or good,” he said.

“It’ll just make people think about what’s more important. I think that’s the same for everyone. People should think a little bit and think, ‘Well what the hell. Someone is not the same as whites and blacks for whites. ‘

“In many cases, blacks are more racist than whites.”
