Karlsruher SC saves in 15th place – Nuremberg has to be relegated

KSC turns game in Fürth

Karlsruher SC managed to stay in the league on the last day of the 2nd Bundesliga. The Baden team won 2-1 (1-1) at SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Sunday and benefited from the simultaneous failure of 1. FC Nürnberg at Holstein Kiel (1-1). The KSC improved in the table from 16th to 15th place and instead sent the Nuremberg team to the relegation.

The Karlsruhe team got off to a bad start and was lagging behind after just over a minute thanks to Daniel Keita-Ruel, who headed straight in from five meters. The equalization by Dominik Kother’s dusting in the 21st minute after Philipp Hofmann’s marginal physical effort fell surprisingly. Shortly before the break, the KSC could even have taken the lead.

In the second half, Keita-Ruel initially missed the Fürth leadership (49th) and then cleared on his own line against Christoph Kobald (57th). Then KSC striker Hofmann struck again. He converted a controversial penalty after Sebastian Ernst’s foul on Marvin Wanitzek at the edge of the box in the 61st minute for his 17th goal of the season – and for the Karlsruhe rescue.

1. FC Nürnberg is in danger of falling into the third division

1. FC Nürnberg converts to the 3rd league on the abyss. The nine-time German champion was the big loser in the relegation battle despite a 1: 1 (1: 0) at Holstein Kiel on the last matchday. With 37 points each, Karlsruhe conquered the saving 15th place due to the slightly better goal difference.

The coach Jens Keller, who was already counted before the missed rescue in Kiel, now has to play two all-or-nothing games in the relegation with his team. Opponents from the 3rd league would currently be FC Ingolstadt. Only at the beginning everything went well for the “club”.

Patrick Erras headed for a free kick from Johannes Geis in the 3rd minute. The Franconian arch rival Fürth was already ahead of the KSC. Geis almost increased to 2: 0 in the 45th minute, but the midfielder’s free kick slapped the post.

Kiel was overall game-determining and equalized with a header by Lion Lauberbach in the 67th minute. The “club” had to win now because the Karlsruhe team had turned the game around in Fürth. The Kiel team came closer to winning two posts in injury time. The Nuremberg professionals sank to the ground disappointed after the final whistle – the tremors before the 3rd league continue.
