Inter has been following Hakimi for two years, says former player Kharja

The right-back is looking to move to Italy after an impressive loan in Dortmund, and a former Moroccan star says the deal has long been controversial

According to former Moroccan international Houssine Kharja, Achraf Hakimi’s move from Real Madrid to Inter has been underway for more than two years.

The right full-back has been on loan at Borussia Dortmund for the past two seasons and should either stay with the Bundesliga side or return to Santiago Bernabeu to compete for a place on Zinedine Zidane’s first team.

Inter chose the Moroccan. Antonio Conte’s team is expected to close a deal for £ 45m (£ 40m / US $ 50m) in the coming days.

The deal was generally seen as a surprise, but former inter-player Kharja said his old club had been interested in the player for a long time and had previously consulted on whether to sign the attacking full-back.

Talk to Italian journalist Gianluca Di MarzioKharja said: “[Inter director Piero] Ausilio has been following him for a long time. Two and a half years ago, when he was still at Real Madrid and wasn’t playing, he asked me about him several times. Inter is a big club and Contes tactics will be perfect for him.

“He is very strong, I have never seen anyone like him in all the years of the national team. He is very intelligent, he will be able to adapt to Italian football. He could fight in the defensive phase, maybe at the beginning.” but he will certainly be helped. Eventually, even Maicon had some difficulties, then he won the treble. Hakimi is ready and will improve.

“Playing in a stadium like San Siro will be an additional incentive: he is not afraid of anything like me. He played in Madrid and Dortmund and also won a Champions League. The Meazza can only charge him.”

Although Hakimi was nominally a defender, he was one of the deadliest attacking forces in Lucien Favre’s Dortmund team this season and could be deployed as a right midfielder in Contes system at Inter.

Hakimi scored nine goals and delivered 10 assists in 45 competitive matches for Dortmund in the 2019-20 season.

The German club’s season ended on Saturday with a downer when they suffered a humiliating 0: 4 home loss to Hoffenheim in the final game of the Bundesliga season.
