Groningen convinced Arjen Robben of the comeback with the Michael Jordan documentary

Mark-Jan Fledderus, technical director at FC Groningen, has revealed that the Dutch first division club used, among other things, the documentary “The Last Dance” about basketball superstar Michael Jordan’s last season with the Chicago Bulls (1997/98) to Arjen To convince Robben of a comeback at his youth club.

Fledderus said at a press conference in summer 2019, shortly after Robben left FC Bayern and announced the end of his career, about a possible engagement in Groningen. “It didn’t happen. But we kept in touch and then secretly arranged with his wife last month that we go to Munich and talk to him.”

The delegation from Groningen arrived at the Robbens on May 21. “We surprised Arjen, it was a great moment. We ordered sushi from her favorite restaurant and showed him a compilation with excerpts from the Jordan documentary ‘The Last Dance’ and footage of Robben himself. We told him that the best way to get there was to go to our club it would help if he played football for us, “said Fledderus.

Robben had announced his career end last year after ten years with Bayern. At Groningen, where he kicked when he was young and once made his professional debut at the age of 16, the 36-year-old will now celebrate his comeback in the upcoming Eredivisie season.
