Exchange of blows between Boris Becker and Nick Kyrgios

Boris Becker had an exchange of blows with the Australian tennis professional Nick Kyrgios on his favorite platform Twitter. Becker was obviously reacting to Kyrgios’ criticism of the behavior of Hamburg’s Alexander Zverev, who apparently once again whistled at the rules of the corona pandemic at a party near Monte Carlo.

“I don’t like rats,” Becker wrote to Kyrgios on Tuesday morning: “Anyone who insults other athletes is not a friend of mine! When you look in the mirror, do you think you are better than us? “

Kyrgios responded immediately: “For heaven’s sake, Boris. I am not interested in a competition or throwing someone over the sharks. We have a global pandemic and if someone is so stupid to do what Alex did, I’ll name it. So easy. ”Later, Kyrgios followed up and threw Becker, whom he called“ Donut ”, at:“ He can hit a volley, but is obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed. ”

Kyrgios had become the chief critic of his German opponent Zverev in the past few days. After the cancellation of the Adriatic tour, which had made the negative headlines with party videos and several corona cases, he had assured himself of isolation. Instead, he apparently celebrated in large company in a club in southern France six days later. Videos appeared on Instagram on Sunday evening.

The dispute between Becker and Kyrgios is astonishing, since the three-time Wimbledon winner had always expressed respect for the badly criticized boy from Down Under. In the past year, Becker had even flirted with coaching Kyrgios.

See you again in Berlin

At least Kyrgios and Zverev will soon meet in Berlin: Zverev should start despite the recent headlines. “We will not rule it out, but it will be tested again today and then go into isolation and train in peace, I hope,” said tournament director Barbara Rittner. “He has to abide by the rules with us”. You won’t see him in Berlin with party pictures. “If he did that, we would exclude him,” announced Rittner.

Zverev is “a good boy with rough edges. Here he behaved – and I clearly condemn that – but completely wrong. He has done a disservice to the whole tennis scene. Because it makes everything shake, the tournaments are now becoming more and more questionable. And if we have positive cases, the whole construct breaks down, ”feared the tournament director.

In addition to the world rankings third Dominic Thiem also Nick Kyrgios. “Since the whole tennis world will look to Berlin for the tournaments, the participants and all employees must be aware of their role model function,” said tournament organizer Edwin Weindorfer. The organizers’ hygiene concept includes testing everyone involved for the corona virus beforehand, fever measurements for the spectators and vacant rows of seats.

The tennis show tournaments in July can now even be held in front of spectators under strict hygiene requirements. As the organizers announced on Tuesday, the approval had been granted by the responsible health authorities.

Up to 800 spectators per day are to be allowed for the match days in the Steffi Graf Stadium (July 13th to 15th); the games in the hangar at Tempelhof Airport (July 17th to 19th) can watch 200 people. Both tournaments will also be broadcast live on ServusTV Germany.
