Edu’s role at Arsenal has been questioned by former Chelsea star Joe Cole

Joe Cole has questioned the work of Arsenal’s technical director Edu behind the scenes after the club decided to offer David Luiz and Cedric Soares new contracts.

The Gunners committed Soares borrower to a permanent four-year contract last week, though the defender hasn’t yet emerged.

33-year-old Luiz, a major earner, was criticized for his performance this season, but his contract was extended for another year.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is undergoing a major overhaul in the Emirates, but Cole isn’t sure whether these recent decisions are driving the club in the right direction.

“The only person I feel sorry for with all of this is Mikel Arteta,” said the ex-Chelsea star at BT Sport. “Because he looks like a great coach and it looks like there’s some kind of system he’s trying to implement.

“We know David Luiz was a top player and won everything in the game, but with the performances this season I don’t know who makes the decision to give him another annual contract.

“Arteta is one of their biggest games of the season and missed it.

“It’s a big signal for me, he let his most experienced player out of the biggest game against Man City – and then give him another annual contract. [It’s] confused thinking. “

Luiz’s 25-minute cameo against City particularly frustrated Arsenal fans after costing his team two goals before he received a red card.

The Brazilian had replaced the injured Pablo Mari, who also signed a permanent four-year contract for Arsenal after only three appearances.

Arteta is said to have been impressed by both Mari and Soares in training and their impact on the squad.

But Cole added, “Cedric – if you want to play Liverpool and Chelsea and sign a 29-year-old full-back who may not be at the level he regularly competes against the top teams, and you ask him to do something change, and then give him a four-year contract.

“If I was an Arsenal fan, I would ask Edu and the people who make these decisions.

“I feel sorry for Arteta because he is promising as a young coach.”
