However, this had no sporting reasons: Götze was recently often with his son Rome, born in June, and wife Ann-Kathrin, did not meet the hygiene requirements of the German Football League (DFL) – and decided not to play. There will also be no farewell game.

Because of the corona pandemic, Götze could not really say goodbye to the fans and they could not say goodbye to him. But at least there was a smaller ceremony: Götze had come to the stadium, he was wearing black mouth-and-nose protection. There was a smile underneath when the BVB management gave him a bouquet of flowers and a framed photo collage to say goodbye.

Applause from the other players

Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, sporting director Michael Zorc, president Reinhard Rauball and license player boss Sebastian Kehl got on the grass for this. For the farewell, Götze’s teammates interrupted their warm-up program and applauded loudly.

Zorc said recently about Götze’s second phase after returning from Bayern four years ago: “Of course, you have to say that the two parties imagined things differently than it went in the end.”

A metabolic disorder made it difficult for Götze. Coach Lucien Favre recently emphasized: “He is and remains a fantastic player. He didn’t play much, also because of the new system. He remains the smartest player I’ve seen, doing everything right on the pitch. I wish him all the best. “
