Werder Bremen saved themselves with a six-goal show in the relegation, Fortuna Düsseldorf relegated directly: The season finale in the Bundesliga saw a surprising turn in the relegation battle. Bremen beat 6-1 (3-0) against 1. FC Köln on Saturday and climbed to 16th place. Düsseldorf went down after 0-3 (0-1) at Union Berlin. “Now the door is open again, I am very optimistic that we can do it,” said Marco Bode, Chairman of the Supervisory Board. The relegation for the Bremen team is now against 1. FC Heidenheim or Hamburger SV.
Fortuna, on the other hand, descends from the Bundesliga for the sixth time. “This is a real low blow. We had planned so much. Today was too little,” said sports director Uwe Klein. The much better starting position before the game day did not help the Fortuna. “In the end, we didn’t make it over the line,” said coach Uwe Rösler.
The remote duel for the premier class was won by Borussia Mönchengladbach against Bayer Leverkusen. Borussia won 2-1 (1-0) against Hertha BSC and ended the season in fourth. Leverkusen also failed a 1-0 (1-0) against FSV Mainz 05 to fourth. How Bayer qualified directly for the group stage of the Europa League is TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, who won 4-0 (2-0) at Borussia Dortmund. VfL Wolfsburg lost 0: 4 (0: 2) against the new champions FC Bayern and must be seventh in the Europa League qualification.
FC Schalke ended the season with a 0: 4 (0: 2) in Freiburg and the 16th winless game in a row. RB Leipzig remains third after a 2-1 (1-0) win at FC Augsburg. SC Paderborn, who was already relegated, lost 2: 3 (0: 2) at Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Bremen team made it clear to the already saved Cologne that they wanted to use their mini-chance to stay in the class. Yuya Osako (22nd / 58th minute), Milot Rashica (27th), Niclas Füllkrug (29th), Davy Klaassen (55th) and Joshua Sargent (68th) scored Werder’s first home win since matchday three. The goal by Dominick Drexler (62.) was without consequences. Because of the 0: 3 of Fortuna by goals of ex-Bremen Anthony Ujah (26.), Christian Gentner (54.) and Suleiman Abdullahi (90.), Werder climbed to 16th place.
Gladbach scored Jonas Hofmann (7th) and Breel Embolo (78th), Hertha 1: 2 by Vedad Ibisevic (90th + 1). For Leverkusen, Kevin Volland’s goal (2nd) was not enough. Borussia did better than last season when Gladbach slipped to fifth behind Leverkusen on matchday 34. Hoffenheim secured sixth place in the table in Dortmund thanks to a four-pack from Andrej Kramaric (8th / 30th / 48th / 50th / foul meter).
The Munich team, already established as champions, didn’t let up in the last game of the season either. After the goals of Kingsley Coman (4th), Michaël Cuisance (37th), Robert Lewandowski with a penalty kick (72nd) and Thomas Müller (79th), Bayern had the clear handing over of the eighth championship cup at the end with a clear 13 points lead Series. Müller’s goal was Munich’s 100th goal this season. “I am proud of what the team has achieved,” said coach Hansi Flick. Wolfsburg’s Joshua Guilavogui still saw yellow-red (71.).
The Schalke ended the season with another defeat in twelfth place. While around 1000 fans demonstrated against the club’s executive board in Gelsenkirchen, Luca Waldschmidt (20th / 57th), Jonathan Schmid (38th) and Lucas Höler (46th) scored the goals for Freiburg.
National striker Timo Werner scored twice in the last game for RB Leipzig before joining FC Chelsea (28th / 80th) and thus secured his club third place. Ruben Vargas meanwhile made up for Augsburg (72nd). Ultimately it was meaningless 3-2 from Eintracht Frankfurt against Paderborn with goals from Sebastian Rode (9.), André Silva (33.) and Bas Dost (52.). Mohamed Dräger (55.) and Sven Michel (75.) met for the East Westphalia./mms/DP/zb
