Arsenal legend Paul Merson has backed Chelsea to lift the Premier League in the next three or four seasons if they invest wisely.
In Frank Lampard’s first season, Chelsea are currently fourth in the register and are securing Champions League football next season. There is still a significant gap between the top two and the pack of pursuers, but Merson thinks it will fill.
“Going to beat Man City was huge,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“It was huge because everyone is trying to close the gap. Chelsea have had good games between today and the end of the season, so I don’t think there is no way to not finish in the top four.”
“I think Chelsea need a left-back, and they may need another midfielder, and then they will be an important force next season. I don’t think they will win the Premier League next season, but the gap they have won is so great. They mean business. The owner was brilliant, he weighed it and left: “Bang! Here’s your money. “
“He looked into the situation and thought: ‘Tottenham is fighting, Pep Guardiola, will not be in the City forever’, and is trying to get into the top four, bridging the gap and the challenge when they get the chance.”
