Arjen Robben has retired due to his last swan song at the youth club FC Groningen

Dutch legend Arjen Robben shocked the football world when he announced that he wanted to retire to play for his home club FC Groningen.

Robben, who won 96 caps for his country and played for Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, announced his retirement in July 2019 at the age of 35.

But after almost a year, he wrote an open letter to the fans expressing his desire to play for the club where he started his career in 1996.

The letter read: “Dear football fans and Groningen fans, I was 12 years old when I started playing in the Groningen Youth Academy.

“I have had many conversations with club staff in the past few weeks and perhaps more than anything else I have listened to our supporters: ‘Arjen, follow your heart’.

“A comeback as a Groninger player – I started playing with this idea and now I’ve made it my mission!

“I want to make my comeback as a football player as a Groningen player. At the moment I am not sure if it will happen. I am sure that my motivation and motivation will be 100 percent correct.”
