An increase in Covid 19 cases in Victoria is forcing changes on the eve of the Super Rugby AU kick-off

“After today’s announcement by the Queensland government that lists the quarantine requirements for all sports teams traveling to or playing against teams from Victoria, the Melbourne Rebels can confirm that we are currently considering alternative venues in NSW to our Super Rugby AU second round match against the Queensland Reds to be held on Friday July 10th.

“The Melbourne Rebels moved to Canberra last Friday, June 26, and took decisive action after consulting with Rugby Australia, RUPA and SANZAAR, as such restrictions by the state government were possible due to the increase in COVID cases in Victoria.

“50 Rebels players and coaching staff are currently preparing as well as possible for the opening game on Saturday evening with the Brumbies in the GIO stadium. The exact venue for next Friday’s game against the Reds has been determined after consultation with Rugby Australia and has not yet been confirmed. “By July 10, all of the rebels’ players and staff will not be in Victoria for the 14 days required to ensure that the Reds do not need to be quarantined after their return to Queensland after the game.

“The Rebels travel group has been and will continue to undergo regular COVID tests, which have so far only yielded negative test results.

“We thank all state governments for their open cooperation and cooperation with us under these special circumstances.

“The current base of the Melbourne Rebels squad after this game on July 10 is also currently being determined. A reunion is planned for the third round. After almost four months of no action, the Australian Super Rugby Clubs and the Western Force will open the Australian domestic league in a clash between the Red and Waratahs on July 3 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
