Alexander Zverev plays in front of spectators at the tennis tournament in Berlin

The Berlin tennis tournaments in mid-July may be held in front of spectators under strict hygiene rules. This was confirmed by the German women’s tennis boss Barbara Rittner in the ZDF morning magazine. “We got the approval yesterday that we can play there in front of up to 1000 spectators,” said the tournament director.

During the Adriatic tour, prominent players such as the German star Alexander Zverev had recently been criticized for violating hygiene rules, and several professionals such as the world number one Novak Djokovic had been infected with the corona virus. A party video of the German top player also appeared a week later, even though he had imposed a quarantine period on himself. The 23-year-old professional has not yet commented on this.

“I am not responsible for whether Sascha Zverev should be punished for this. I think he is punishing himself with a loss of image, because that makes him unbelievable,” criticized Rittner, who expects Zverev to start in Berlin.

“We will not rule it out, but it will be tested again today and then go into isolation and exercise in peace, I hope,” said Rittner. “He has to stick to the rules with us”. You won’t see him with party pictures in Berlin. “If he did that, we would exclude him,” announced Rittner.

Zverev “has done a disservice to the tennis scene”

Zverev was “a good boy with corners and edges. Here he behaved – and I clearly judge that – but completely wrong. He did a terrible job for the whole tennis scene. Because it makes everything shake, the tournaments are now more and more questionable. And if we have positive cases, the whole construct breaks down, “fears the tournament director.

The “extreme hygiene concept” includes the fact that every viewer must first measure a fever and then go through a hygiene tunnel “in which one is not irradiated with moisture but with air,” said Rittner. “We will test all players who are required to arrive two days before the event,” she said. “Unfortunately there will be no autographs and there will be no contact from players to children or fans,” said Rittner.

From July 13 to 15, a show tournament with six women and six men is planned in the Steffi Graf Stadium in Berlin, in which 1000 spectators are approved. After that, a hard court tournament will take place in the hangar on Tempelhofer Feld from July 17th to 19th, in which up to 220 visitors can be there.
