A-League meets the reset mode with coaches

The Roar confirmed on Monday that they had parted from Liverpool legend less than a season after his tenure.

Fowler’s departure means that if the league resumes on July 16 after a COVID 19 break, four clubs will appear on the field among interim coaches.

Melbourne Victory has to find a long-term replacement for Marco Kurz after the German’s release in January.

The situation is similar with the Western Sydney Wanderers, where Jean-Paul de Marigny still plays a temporary role after Markus Babbel’s departure, while Adelaide and the Dutch Gertjan Verbeek parted ways during the shutdown.

Robinson, who was only hired by the Jets in February, said the situation was a sign of changing times within the competition.

“The A-League is at a certain stage of its progress, obviously now with the Fox deal. Maybe it’s a reset phase that is very important,” he said.

“The fantastic news of the upcoming Women’s World Cup will spark renewed interest, which is very important, but there are a number of factors that they obviously need to fix, which I think they will do over a period of time.”

Robinson, a former Premier League football player, was surprised by Fowler’s departure, but also knows that it is an integral part of a professional coach.

The Roar have stated that they will appoint an Australian for the role, an attitude that Robinson says makes sense as long as the club finds the best candidate for the position.

“There is this party line where you have to hire local coaches and I read and smile and you know what I’m saying, I was a foreign coach in America and then suddenly because I spent six to seven years there , I was an American coach even though I come from Wales, “he said.

“They hire the best coach possible for the job. Whether he’s from Wales, if he’s from Timbuktu or if he’s from Australia.

“If there is a level of talent in Australia equal to that in Wales, without a doubt hire the local Australian coach … but you can learn from both overseas and Australian coaches.”
