How Man Utd will react to Mauricio Pochettino’s Premier League return comments | Football | Sport

Had Manchester United chief Ed Woodward got his way in 2016, Mauricio Pochettino would have gone to Old Trafford. The Red Devils supremo has long admired the Argentine, who worked wonders during his time at Tottenham prior to his sacking in October last year. But United are unlikely to flinch in the wake of comments made by the 48-year-old.

Pochettino was subject of interest by United in 2016 – only for the club to end up going for Jose Mourinho instead.

That was because the Red Devils knew Tottenham would never let him go, with Spurs chief Daniel Levy valuing the Argentine prior to his sacking back in October.

Pochettino was also United’s dream target to replace Mourinho in December 2018 but, in the end, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer secured the job after a stunning run as interim manager.

Now, the ex-Tottenham boss has admitted he’d love to return to England.

“I love England,” Pochettino told Sky Sports News.

“My idea is to keep living in London but at the same time, I am open to different countries, to listen and see what happens.

“I am ready and we are a much better coaching staff now. We have learnt a lot from our experiences at Espanyol, Southampton and Tottenham.

“We have a lot to provide to the people that will trust in us in the future.”

United, though, won’t be making a move for Pochettino. They won’t react to his comments, with the club very much invested in former striker Solskjaer.

Back in December, the Norwegian appeared to be battling for his job. A 2-0 defeat to Burnley was the night his number seemed up.

United were outclassed that night, put to the sword by a Burnley side who took to the occasion – cruising to victory courtesy of goals from Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez.

And United are very much behind Solskjaer, installed with the belief that he’s the right man for the job and the right man to lead them back to the summit of the English game.

They’ve been planning for transfers with the Norwegian, agreeing that the likes of Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and Jude Bellingham would all be sufficient fits.

And the way United have suddenly looked easy on the eye again has further convinced Woodward and the Glazers they have the right man.

Sacking him and going for Pochettino now would make little sense.

But, if Pochettino were to take a job at a team outside of the top six, there will always be the possibility of him being named as manager one day.

Not now, though. It’s Solskjaer’s time.
