Arsenal want William Saliba’s defensive partner to follow him to the Emirates

Arsenal are hoping to sign William Saliba’s defensive partner at Saint-Etienne in the next transfer window.

The Gunners have been poor at the back this season, conceding 36 in the Premier League so far.

Three managers in the shape of Unai Emery, Freddie Ljungberg and Mikel Arteta have failed to find a winning combination at the back.

Though there are signs that under the latter, matters are improving.

Shkodran Mustafi, David Luiz and Sokratis have all endured periods of poor form.

But there is optimism over next year with the arrival of Saliba, who was signed last summer but allowed to stay in Ligue 1 for another year to continue his development.

Arsenal have high hopes for William Saliba next season

The 19-year-old has gone from strength to strength with Saint-Etienne.

And Arsenal want him to feel right at home at the Emirates by partnering him up with his centre-back buddy Wesley Fofana.

Despite their standing in Ligue 1, where Claude Puel’s men have finished 17th, the two defenders have been standout performers.

According to But! Football via Sport Witness, Fofana was eyed by Everton in January with Arsenal registering an interest later.

However, the 19-year-old has no immediate plans to leave France just yet.

He wants to stay at least another season to repay the faith shown in him by former Leicester and Southampton boss Puel.

That does not mean a transfer has been ruled out, though.

The report goes on to state that his preferred destination is England, which is a boost for Arsenal.

And a similar deal to the one that landed Saliba could be made to make sure the two stay together for the foreseeable future.

As a result of the Ligue 1 campaign being ended early, it leaves the teenager’s immediate future in the air.

His loan expires at the end of June but the Premier League season is unlikely to have been wrapped up by then.

However, the likelihood of Saliba playing any part this season for the Gunners is minimal with Premier League squads already registered.
