When the NBA announced that it would put an end to the game on March 11 due to growing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, it triggered a chain of reactions that resulted in the postponement or cancellation of several other sports leagues. At this point, it is not yet clear when the game will resume, although the commissioners from all over the world of sport held a conference call with President Donald Trump on Saturday afternoon.
Trump told commissioners that he hopes to get fans back to the arenas and stadiums by late summer or early fall, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Adrian Wojnarowski. That announcement will likely be taken with a grain of salt, however, as it is still too early to know how the virus will still affect us at that point.
Together with Adam Silver, the other sports commissioners involved in the call including Roger Goodell (NFL), Rob Manfred (MLB), Gary Bettman (NHL), Cathy Engelbert (WNBA), Jay Monahan (PGA Tour), Michael Whan (LPGA Tour), Dana White (UFC), Vince McMahon (WWE) , Roger Penske (IndyCar), Drew Fleming (Breeders Cup) and Don Garber (MLS), according to the White House.
Silver has tried to remain optimistic about the chances that the league will hit the game again this current season, and reportedly the NBA has beenfor the 2019-20 season. There has been talk of a truncated playoff format, with all the games taking place in Las Vegas as a way to limit the amount of travel, and thus slow down the spread of the COVID-19 virus. There are many circles to eliminate and questions to answer to make it possible, but if this season could be saved in some way, the NBA would try.
There is also a report that the NBA is preparing the, if there seems to be no safe way to resume games. This does not mean that the season will be canceled, but that the league is preparing for all possible outcomes as the spread of coronavirus continues to deteriorate in the United States. The league has billions of dollars up for grabs and canceling the rest of the season isn’t ideal, but if there is no way to continue playing in the next two months, the chances of not having an NBA 2020 champion will increase.
