NFL 2020 draft: rank the players who deserve the first round

With the NFL 2020 Draft (April 23-35) just around the corner, the teams are entering the final stages of preparation for the event. With that in mind, I thought it would be a good time to reveal my ranking of prospects which, in my opinion, are worthy of a first round vote.

As you can see, with 32 selections in Round 1, I haven’t included enough players to fill every slot in the first round, but that’s not the goal. You can check my most recent mock draft to see my projection for the first 32 draft choices. These are the 27 most deserving prospects for this high first-round status, in my humble opinion.

School: LSU | Year: Senior (RS)

The rise of this director has been surprising in many ways. Smart, athletic and tough. Create and finish.

School: Ohio State | Year: Junior

I could
SO easily get it first. It hits every snap when it is on the field and will be the player with the highest score on the cards of most teams.

School: Clemson | Year: Junior (RS)

Versatility is the trait most often mentioned for him in preliminary discussions. Let’s not forget how it looks in the right place (and forcefully) one shot after another.

School: Ohio State | Year: Junior

He takes very few missteps, covers the receivers and also copes well. Complete corner.

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

We wouldn’t all like to be compared to
left handed Drew Brees?! His injury history prevents him from entering a higher position on this list, but with good health in the future, he may end up becoming the best player on this project.

School: Louisville | Year: Junior

A great debate rages on who is the best of the top four tackles of the project. This colossus with incredible agility is the best for me.

School: Auburn | Year: Senior

The best defensive force within the project. Play the race, push the pocket against the passage and play with great effort on each down.

School: Oklahoma | Year: Junior

A wonderful mix of intelligence, athleticism and wow. He knows where the final zone is and he gets there frequently (25 TD in the last two seasons).

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

Extraordinary package of precise path, sticky hands and good speed. He performed as a professional while still in college.

School: Iowa | Year: Junior

There was a lot of chatter about him that he could potentially kick in to protect (or was it just me?!) Heading for the NFL
Scouting combination. But his performance at the event consolidated him as Day 1 starting from LT.

School: Florida | Year: Junior

Man’s coverage is his strong point. Plaster to receivers, and they will face.

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

Not only is he the fastest player in the draw, he is also willing to make tough catches. Give it space and you could see it in the final area.

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

Great mixture of size, speed and malice. It was a right tackle, but he can definitely play on the left side.

School: LSU | Year: Junior

It opened his eyes to his ability to play outside the numbers, as well as in the slot, to the combine. Excellent control of the body and dominates the balls of the moment of truth thrown in its way.

School: TCU | Year: Junior (RS)

I love his readiness off the ball, the general understanding of defense and the enthusiasm to mix it with every game.

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

He can play in a variety of spots and excels in each one. McKinney can run the passerby, cover in the slot and he really feels good about the game.

School: Georgia | Year: Junior

If there is one player that I have too low, it is this three year old starter with good footwork, hand positioning and strength in the running game.

School: Oregon | Year: Senior

Prototypical size, one of the best weapons in the project and has shown amazing post-season movement skills. His intelligence is also undisputed (he won the
Campbell Trophy of the National Football Foundation, a.k.a. the academician Heisman).

School: LSU | Year: Sophomore (RS)

ATHLETIC! Innate leadership skills. It should be used in a myriad of ways off the edge.

School: Colorado | Year: Junior

One of my huge “dunks” in this draft. This is exactly what a creative call-caller asks his GM: he can make great plays from the perimeter, from the slot, as a runner and even as a QB Wildcat. It’s probably ranked higher here than it is on most cards. I am happy to raise it!

School: Utah State | Year: Junior (RS)

If he were entering the project exiting his 2018 season in Utah State, his ranking would be higher here, as his follow-up campaign was not so impressive. That said, the talent and potential are there for him to be in the top 10 if there is an early QB run.

School: Oklahoma | Year: Junior

So active. He chases and catches the boys with the ball in his hand. Face the car.

School: LSU | Year: Junior

It can be used in any defensive pattern and when he sees the ball in front of him, he gets there in a flash.

School: Georgia | Year: Junior

The top rated RB on many boards can do it all. Swift runs with power, vision and catches the ball off the pitch. A key selling point? A low odometer (440 transports in three seasons to UGA). A lot of step left on his tires.

School: Wisconsin | Year: Junior

I think people forgot he was a high school sprint champion. He gave everyone a reminder about the combine with a sub-4.4 40. Taylor is used to a heavy workload and I think he can catch the ball better than most suspects.
