Wimbledon could be canceled with a decision to be made next week

The tournament organizer claims to have evaluated all possible scenarios, including both postponement and cancellation, amid the growing outbreak of the new coronavirus.
The grand court slam is slated to begin on June 29, but a statement released by AELTC on Wednesday acknowledged the challenges ahead, especially since the UK government imposed blocking restrictions on the country.
“The unprecedented challenge presented by the COVID-19 crisis continues to influence our lifestyle in ways we could not have imagined, and our thoughts are directed to all those affected in the UK and around the world,” said the AELTC CEO Richard Lewis in a statement.

“The single most important consideration concerns public health and we are determined to act responsibly through the decisions we make.

“We are working hard to give certainty to our plans for 2020 and we have convened an emergency meeting of the AELTC main board for the next week, in which a decision will be made.”

Wimbledon is slated to begin on June 29 this year.

    Further interruption

The possibility of the tournament taking place behind closed doors was formally excluded by the organizers, who also admitted that the relatively short court season would make postponement difficult.

The French Open, which is expected to start on May 18, has already been rejected until September, while all professional tennis has been temporarily suspended until further notice.
While the world of sports has been severely affected by the spread of Covid-19 – particularly with the postponement of Tokyo 2020 – athletes have gathered to raise money for those who fight the virus.
Roger Federer and his wife Mirka will personally donate 1 million Swiss francs ($ 1.02 million) to help the most vulnerable families in Switzerland affected by the epidemic.
