Task Force is feverishly looking for a new appointment in 2021

Toshiro Muto and Yuriko Koike seemed to shudder at the mountain of work waiting for them. The task is “overwhelming,” said the managing director of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee. “We have problems that are piling up,” said the governor of Tokyo.

The postponement of the games of the XXXII. Olympics for a maximum of one year due to the new type of corona virus is so complicated and diverse that the working group called “Let’s Go”, which comprises around 30 people and is supposed to solve all problems related to the postponement, on Thursday with the utmost respect for the first meeting met.

“In short,” said the president of the organizing committee, Yoshiro Mori, in a message on the company’s website, “what we have been working on for seven years has come to a screeching halt just as we are about to start.”

Now the same task had to be packed in about six months, which it would have taken seven years to do. “It will be difficult.” And expensive. Muto spoke in his opening speech of “massive” additional costs. The Kyodo news agency announced that Yuriko Koike would ask the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to help cover the costs.

The most pressing task for the task force is to find a new date for the games in the coming year. “We are racing against time,” said Muto: “There are so many problems that can not be solved if the new date for the games is not fixed.” Muto said that the interests of the world associations and National Olympic Committees , the sponsors, the television stations and of course the IOC would have to be taken into account.

On Thursday, a conference call by the IOC with the 33 affected Olympic World Associations should also deal with issues relating to laying. Some of them would prefer to postpone the games, which will also be called Tokyo 2020 next year, to spring in order to be able to pull through their major events in summer. IOC President Thomas Bach said at a press conference on Wednesday that all dates could be considered by the summer of 2021. “All options are on the table.”

One of the central questions in Tokyo: whether the Olympic athletes’ village can be saved for next year’s games as planned or whether it will be occupied by the new apartment owners in autumn, as originally planned. Other topics include the sports facilities that are no longer available, the temporary facilities that are now used for longer, ticket sales, hotel bookings, transport, the security plan and much more. There were thousands of contracts that needed to be changed, Muto said.

Meanwhile, criticism of the IOC’s and the Japanese government’s hesitant approach, which despite the deterioration of the corona situation and the despair of athletes who had lost their training opportunities, had only been able to agree on a postponement of the games on Tuesday. The IOC are also embarrassed by the allegations made by the Turkish boxing association, which claims that two of its athletes and a trainer had been infected with the corona virus during the European Olympic qualification with 40 nations, which began in London on March 14 and was canceled after three days . “While the world was taking extreme measures against the virus, I was amazed that an IOC task force and the British government approved the tournament, although many of us were concerned and almost every other sport had already canceled all events,” said Eyup Gozgec told the Guardian newspaper. The IOC had withdrawn the Olympic boxing qualification from the Aiba World Boxing Association because it disagreed with the association’s management and had commissioned its own task force to do so. The German boxers who started in London were put in a fortnightly quarantine after returning home.

Only the American President Donald Trump demonstrated doubtful optimism that Japan and the IOC will tackle the task with flying colors. In a tweet, he congratulated Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the IOC for the “wise decision” and announced his coming next year. As if there was no choice in between in November.
