Nets’ Garrett Temple uses the coronavirus break to start his legal career

With much of the country saying home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, people have to find ways to fill their spare time. Of course, Garrett’s temple found one productive.

Swiss Post reported in January that Temple was considering going to law school when his NBA career was over. Now with the coronavirus stopped, guard Nets told YES Network that he is using the time to study for LSAT.

“I’ll be honest, I slept a lot, but I also tried to take on a new task. I actually started practicing for LSAT preparation,” said Temple. “I am a person who thought about going to law school when I finished playing. What is a better time than now to be able to study three or four hours a day for a test that allows me to enter law school? So it is what I’m doing now. “

Temple is a vice president of the players’ association, with many people suggesting that one day he could lead the organization. Nets’ teammates even started calling him “The President”.

With a degree in business administration from LSU, Temple had always thought of getting an MBA. This was until a few years ago, when his father suggested another way – a legal one.

“Honestly, I’ve been thinking about it for the past three years. My dad put a seed on my head. I was thinking about more MBAs. I graduated in economics, so I was thinking about more MBAs. My dad was telling me that the faculty of jurisprudence is something quite prestigious with a law degree and teaches you to think differently.

“I’ve always been a great debtor. I’m quite literal. When I get into discussions, I’m a person you’d probably want to quit fighting with because I’m going to get everything you say.”

Earlier this season – through the wife of network owner Joe Tsai, Clara – Temple, he was introduced to attorney Bryan Stevenson. Now Stevenson is a clinical professor at the New York University School of Law, but his work as wrongfully freed convicts has become the subject of the film “Just Mercy” with Michael B. Jordan.

In January, Temple went into his pocket to pay for a “Just Mercy” screening for local children and made the networks do the same things. And the meeting with Stevenson – as well as other lawyers – convinced Temple to make that career after this career.

“So go into space to watch that ‘Just Mercy’ move and talk to Bryan Stevenson, have a conversation with him and some other lawyers I admire, just understand how much impact you can have with a law degree in a lot of different ways,” he said. Temple said. “You don’t necessarily have to practice the law, but having that knowledge is something that intrigues me.”

Temple added that – to keep the players in shape – the nets sent them all the gym equipment and gave them a 1.5 hour training regimen.

“It’s best to believe that Dan Meehan and Dan Liburd, our strength coaches, can find ways to be fit wherever you are,” said Temple. “You could be on the moon with nothing and they will find a way to make sure you stay fit.”

Rodions Kurucs was due to report to Brooklyn on Monday for his crime of assault. But his lawyer Alex Spiro told The Post that the case has been updated administratively and that a new date will eventually be set.
