Binge-watching can also age.
As you repaired on the spot, you started reviewing Breaking Bad, which led to Better Call Saul. Afterwards, you revisited the best episodes of The Office. You sat down with your loved one and worked again on the highlights of the Marvel Comics universe movies so that your significant other finally fully understood Endgame. You also tried Peaky Blinders.
Now is the time to bring basketball back into your life.
The NBA may be on hiatus but has opened League Pass for everyone to stream during the hiatus. Our Dan Feldman has found the best way to access all the content is to go to this program, click on the desired game box score, then “NBA LEAGUE PASS” to the right of the quarterly scores. Then click “Watch” at the top center of the next page. The league has also released sixty-five classic games that you can watch here.
What games should you watch? Here are my 10 tips:
Chicago to Cleveland
May 7, 1989, a victory of 101-100 bulls
Michael Jordan, at its peak, hits “the shot” on Craig Elho in one of MJ’s iconic moments. Jordan had 44 points and dominated the game, although Elho had 24 off the bench and the Cavs would not have been in the game without his game. (The Bulls would be lost in the Eastern Conference finals against the Bad Boy Pistons, which occurred for a few years in a row.)
Toronto to LA Lakers
January 22, 2006, a victory of 122-104 Lakers
The 81-point game by Kobe Bryant. What people tend to forget about this game is that Kobe had to leave to give these Lakers – who gave birth to Smush Parker, Kwame Brown and Chris Mihm – a few nights’ chance. The Lakers were slow and down 14 by half, but Kobe took control and won the Lakers with one of his iconic performances.
Cleveland in Golden State
June 19, 2016, a win of 93-89 Cavaliers
This was the culmination of Cleveland’s 3-1 return in these NBA finals, the game in which Kyrie Irving hit the game’s three winners, Kevin Love played a good defense when it mattered and LeBron James secured his legacy. Many of the great Warriors Finals games are also available in streaming, but the thrills and epic games in this game make it an all-time classic.
Oklahoma City in Portland
April 23, 2019, wins a 118-115 Trail Blazer
Damian Lillard marks a 15-point return to Trail Blazer in the past eight minutes (CJ McCollum also had a lot to do with this), then ends the Russell Westbrook era in OKC with a shot from the logo at the end of time. So say hello. It was Lillard’s iconic moment and an intense game worth reviewing.
GAMES FROM THIS SEASON
LA Lakers vs. LA Clippers:
On Christmas day, a victory for 111-106 Clippers
March 8, a Lakers victory of 112-103
These are two of the top three teams in the NBA (Milwaukee also has his hat in the ring), and their matches have been some of the best games this season. On Christmas day Kawhi Leonard watched the MVP ending a bit, reaching his points and dropping 35, so the Clippers resisted late with a defensive stand where Patrick Beverley threw the ball from LeBron James’ hands. So on March 8, LeBron made his MVP case with a masterful game and Anthony Davis stepped up with a huge night. Whatever the format of the NBA playoffs at the end of this season, we need these for the teams they face.
Los Angeles Clippers in Boston
February 13, 2020, a Celtic 141-133 2OT victory
A double overtime thriller that was perhaps the funniest game this season, this was Jayson Tatum’s breakout game. Tatum went hand in hand with Kawhi Leonard and was the best player that day, scoring 39 points in shooting 14 by 23.
Philadelphia in Miami
December 28, 2019, a 117-116 OT Heat victory
Jimmy Butler – wearing those fantastic Miami Vice rebounds – tackling his former team in the 76er was one of the classics of the season. Joel Embiid was the best player on the pitch, scoring 35 and knocking down 11 boards, but a balanced Miami attack with seven double-digit players played too much. Butler himself hit the free throws of the OT dagger.
Brooklyn to Memphis
October 27, 2019, a victory for the Grizzlies 134-133
Ja Morant will win the Rookie of the Year (Sion hasn’t played in enough games, sorry, availability is still the best skill), and that was his breakout game. He scored 17 points in the fourth quarter and then stopped Kyrie Irving’s attempt to win a game. Morant has been special this season and deserves the ROY trophy.
Portland to New Orleans
February 11, 2020, a victory for the Pelicans 138-117
Zion Williamson entered the NBA with unreasonable expectations, then surpassed them. It immediately became a must for watching television. Undoubtedly watch his best game, a 31 points, nine rebounds, five assisted assists (in less than 28 minutes), while pushing a dominant third quarter and the return victory for the pelicans.
