PITTSBURGH – A new Watt is arriving in Pittsburgh, but he is moving from Los Angeles, not from Houston.
Derek Watt, signed by the Steelers in free agency, had a smile in his voice when he recognized that he may not be the favorite brother of Steelers fans to join the linebacker T.J. Watt.
“I know I’m not the big and sexy signature that J.J. [Watt] it probably would be, but I’m going to do everything I can to not disappoint those fans and only Steeler Nation as a whole, and do everything I can to help us win some games and bring another championship to Pittsburgh, “he said on a conference call Thursday. “It would be something incredibly special for my family if we could somehow get all three together on the field in the same uniform.”
For now, though, only the two younger Watt brothers will fit in black and gold while older brother J.J. Watt encourages them from afar.
“J.J., is very happy for us because we have this opportunity,” said Derek Watt. “He always said he was envious of me and TJ, we had the chance to play together in high school, college and now at the NFL. He knows how special he is. He never had this opportunity. I kept missing him for a year … he is extremely happy for us. He is jealous that we can play together. “
Upon entering the agency for the first time, Watt had interest from three or four teams before choosing the Steelers. During the trial, his agents minimized the interest of the Steelers to prevent Watt’s central brother from hoping to play with T.J. for the first time since the two got together in Wisconsin from 2012 to 2015.
The Steelers, however, were very interested in adding the full back, not only for its versatility in attack as a blocker and dream catcher, but for the skill of its special teams. In his last year with Los Angeles battery chargers, Watt gained an alternate spot in the Pro Bowl after racking up 17 special team tackles.
“As an NFL full-back, it’s better to be a guy from special teams, a guy from special base teams,” he said. “You have to know your role.”
When the two sides agreed to the $ 9.75 million three-year deal, Watt’s agents finally told him how interested the Steelers were in signing it.
“The day I ended up getting the offer and choosing the Steelers, they revealed that they were downplaying it a bit because they knew how excited I would be to play with TJ and play for such a big organization, “He said. “They revealed that,” Hey buddy, they’ve always been one of the teams that wanted you badly. They really respect your game. “And they think it’s perfect for me there.”
The full back immediately called his wife and son before making a second call to T.J. Watt. All three brothers have returned home to Wisconsin, and are currently conducting their off-season training at J.J. Watt’s home after the COVID-19 epidemic forced them from their usual training facility and the training team of eight or nine other NFL players in the area.
“I wouldn’t say it’s very downgrade to go there to train,” said Derek Watt. “We kept things fun.”
Although he will move to Pittsburgh, he does not plan to live with his brother.
“Once we get to Pittsburgh, I’m not going to say we’re going to be roommates,” said Watt. “He doesn’t want it. I know my wife doesn’t want it. It would be great, yes, but there is a fine line between being each other every day, nonstop. So we’ll watch and hopefully get out in the area soon. He’s a little crazy, wild with this coronavirus stuff he’s just trying to protect everyone.
“We will do it carefully, but we will try to find a place. And if it can be near him, the same neighborhood or the surrounding area, it would be fantastic.”
Even though the Watt brothers don’t live together, Derek has admitted that T.J. he has an advantage in the race to become his son Logan’s favorite uncle.
“He is still a little young to fully understand the situation, but T.J. will surely have the upper hand now,” said Derek Watt. “If he somehow gets it wrong and doesn’t go out as a favorite uncle, this is 100% for him. He’ll definitely have more access and more opportunities to stay close to Logan and spoil him as much as possible.”
