It shouldn’t end like this. It cannot end like this. But for the Boston Celtics and the other 29 league teams, it could end like this.
The spread of COVID-19 has swept away the 2020 Olympics and March Madness and it seems possible that logistically it is becoming too difficult to continue the current NBA season.
The chain effects of Coronavirus will be felt at the championship level in relation to the salary limit and the share of revenue. The losses will give owners less money to spend, but the losses don’t end there.
Players are likely to lose money as every million dollars spent bring each team closer to a now reduced line of taxpayers. The teams have just spent a lot of money in recent years with the expectation that the wage cap will rise to $ 125 million in 2021.
With that expectation marred by the global pandemic, there will likely be far less money spent this low season than in recent years. Role players will have a much more difficult road this summer considering that the mid-level exception will likely be less and more teams will qualify for the mid-level taxpayer than the total.
In this Boston Celtics roster, there are some obvious cuts that seem to be made if this is really the end of the season. With an eye to the future, Danny Ainge now knows that the present could produce positive results.
