Lillard was interviewed by the league on Saturday, sources said.
The great jazz man Rudy Gobert was credited with a block to save the game while Lillard went to the basket for what would have been a game lay-up with 11.2 seconds remaining in the game. Lillard’s shot hit the glass before Gobert hit the ball, which is a clear violation of the goalkeeper that was nullified.
The game could not be reviewed because officials had to make the concierge call to activate a review.
After the game, a bruise Lillard had to restrain director of security officer Rick Riley from approaching the referees.
Sources said the officers’ explanations to some Trail Blazer members on the field at the time of the dispute were that he “wasn’t even close” to a goalkeeper, which further infuriated the team.
“We get to the last game and lose a simple call,” Lillard said during his post-game address after the 117-114 defeat. “And then they tell us it’s a simple call, as if obviously he wasn’t a goalkeeper. It cost us a fucking game, man.”
The defeat brought the Trail Blazers to 24-29, two and a half games in the eighth and final playoff of the Western Conference. Portland is a team struggling with numerous injuries to key players and Lillard’s 42-point explosion was flawed on Friday evening.
“We have since reviewed it through a post-game video review and unfortunately saw that we missed the game, and that it would have been called a bad violation,” crew chief Josh Tiven told a pool reporter after the match.
Lillard tweeted, “We don’t want to hear that punk -ss s-t,” in his response to Tiven acknowledging the missed call.
Trail Blazers are also irritated with jazz swingman Royce O’Neale for what the team considered a “dirty game” for his role in the injury of guard Anfernee Simons, sources said.
Simons exited the game in the first quarter with a concussion after O’Neale found himself under the air guard while he was shooting. Simons landed at O’Neale’s feet, collapsed to the ground and slammed the back of his head onto the hardwood. He stayed down for several minutes before being escorted to the locker room.
Simons is now under the league’s concussion protocol program.
The Jazz and Trail Blazers face off for the fourth and final time in the regular season on April 2 in Portland.
