Is Mikaela Shiffrin still racing in the World Cup this season? Your message on Instagram does not indicate a return soon. The deep mourning is probably still too hard on the US ski star. On February 2, her father Jeff died unexpectedly at the age of 65 after an accident.
Shiffrin always seems to capture the past in her current situation. At the memory that she publishes, she cuddles on the shoulder of her beloved father in childhood. Her “kind, loving, caring, patient, wonderful father”, as she described him after death.
The inconsolable slalom queen quotes the lyrics from the song “Breathe Again” by Sara Barreilles: “I cannot breathe, I am abandoned, hope that one day I can breathe again.”
In order to process the shock message, the Olympic champion announced three weeks ago that she would stay in her home town of Vail (Colorado) for the time being. The last race was held on January 26th in Bansko (Bulgaria).
The American is also missing from the races in Crans-Montana this weekend. As the American Ski Association writes, the time of their return is still open. Up to and including the last World Cup weekend in Cortina (March 18-22), four destinations are on the horizon.
Will Shiffrin still breathe the air of competition this season? The 24-year-old is apparently currently asking very different questions: How to breathe in her deep pain. (Str)
