Trainer Uwe Rösler missed the hoped-for liberation at his Bundesliga premiere with Fortuna Düsseldorf. The relegation-threatened Rhinelanders parted in the first game after the formative term of Friedhelm Funkel despite an appealing performance 1: 1 (0: 0) from Eintracht Frankfurt and had to accept the compensation in stoppage time. The Fortuna initially left the last place in the table, but could crash again in the course of the 20th matchday. Kaan Ayhan (78.) put Düsseldorf in the lead with a deflected free kick, but Timothy Chandler (90. + 4.) Scored the late 1-1.
Rösler, who was presented on Wednesday for the spark released on the same day, has a lot of work ahead of the upcoming English week with away games in the cup at 1. FC Kaiserslautern and in the league at VfL Wolfsburg. Frankfurt remains unbeaten in the new year after victories in Hoffenheim and against leaders Leipzig and has a comfortable lead over the relegation zone.
Rösler changed personnel in his debut in the German upper house and gave Valon Berisha the confidence two days after his commitment, Kevin Stöger made his starting comeback next to him in central midfield. US goalkeeper Zack Steffen, unlike previously announced, did not manage to return between the posts. He was replaced by the last blundering Florian Kastenmeier.
Rösler initially watched the game in a black vest while sitting and kept getting up for instructions to his team. This started bravely in front of 45,018 spectators: the playful Stöger and Berisha were the creative center, Matthias Zimmermann gave the first warning shot early (5th). On the other side, Kastenmeier saved against Timothy Chandler (7th).
Then the game flattened. The guests on the first leg goal scorers Bas Dost (gastrointestinal) had to do without, gained a little more field shares. However, there was hardly any danger, Fortuna had the fast-moving Frankfurt players under control and was compact.
Even the Rösler team found it difficult to reach the opposing goal, often failing on the last pass. When Nana Ampomah quickly went to his strike partner Rouwen Hennings, the ball shot just past the goal (37 ‘). Shortly afterwards, Düsseldorf’s Alfredo Morales significantly distorted (39.). The Fortuna fans, for whom Sparkle enjoyed a high reputation, supported the team loudly, but also appreciated the experienced veteran: “The people united and the club shaped – Friedhelm, we bow” was on a banner in the south curve.
After a huge chance by Djibril Sow (46.) shortly after the restart, the hosts caught and cheered a short time later. The referee Frank Willenborg (Osnabrück), however, justifiably withdrew the Ampomah goal after a strong preparation for the outside instep of Berisha after being checked by the Cologne basement because of an offside position.
Düsseldorf shook itself and remained more conspicuous in the increasingly heated game, but rarely came to a closing position. The Frankfurt team of coach Adi Hütter was largely limited to countering. Ayhan’s free kick was deflected by Danny da Costa so unfortunate that Kevin Trapp had no chance in the Frankfurt goal. With Chandler’s compensation, the video assistant looked closely, but could not find an offside position.
