The Italian Dorothea Wierer is after the gold in the pursuit also world champion in the individual race. Vanessa Hinz made a mistake in the last shoot and won the silver medal. Bronze went to the Norwegian Marte Olsbu Roiseland in Antholz.
The individual race is the race in biathlon where good shooting performance is particularly important. Every missed shot is punished with a minute’s loss instead of a penalty. Whoever has the shortest time at the finish is world champion.
In the individual race of the women over the 15 kilometers, however, hardly any athlete remained faultless. That was another reason why mileage was decisive in the end, and Wierer, who made one more mistake than Hinz, secured the world championship title with a 2.2 second lead over the German.
For a long time it looked like a gold medal for the German. It remained flawless in the first three attacks – it made a mistake only in the last standing attack. Therefore, in the end it became very close between the Italian and the German. In the last split, Wierer was less than two seconds ahead. The leader in the overall World Cup started for the final sprint and thus secured the next world title.
For Hinz it is the first individual medal at world championships. Their joy after the race was correspondingly great. “Vice World Champion sounds damn awesome. It’s an incredibly beautiful day, I’m still shaking,” Hinz told ZDF.
Franziska Preuss also convinced at the shooting range and finished fifth. The silver medalist from the pursuit, Denise Herrmann, finished 12th, Karolin Horchler finished 26th.
