According to a report by Sport BildBayern Munich are interested in right back Paris Saint-Germain Thomas Meunier. The Belgian, whose contract expires this summer, may be one of the few players available at low prices this January.
This is now the fourth right-back to which Bayern has been linked in recent months, following rumors of interest for players such as João Cancelo of Manchester City and Achraf Hakimi of Borussia Dortmund. It is clear that the Bavarians are looking for someone to add deeply to the full back so that Joshua Kimmich can continue playing in the defensive midfield and Benjamin Pavard can return to his favorite position in the center of the central defender.
The same report says that Jerome Boateng, who has attracted the interest of the Serie A AC Milan club, will not be allowed to leave in the winter due to the lack of depth of the team. Winter departures are still unlikely anyway, so it’s no surprise, but Boateng is likely to leave in the summer. Bayern’s current search for a right-back, therefore, could be an attempt to mitigate the impact of his departure by allowing Pavard to return to the center-full-back.
Obviously, bringing Joshua Kimmich back on defense would have accomplished the same thing, without the need to spend on a stop measure like Meunier, but Bayern seems to be busy with the idea of copying Germany and playing Kimmich as a midfielder. If so, the club could certainly do worse than the 28 year old Belgian.
