Handball European Championship: Spain cannot be stopped by the Czech Republic

| |

Defending champion Spain started the main round of the European Handball Championship with a 31:25 (14: 9) win against the Czech Republic. At the start of the second tournament phase in Group I, the Spaniards lived up to their favorites status and now have 4: 0 points. The Spaniards have won all of their previous four European Championship games.

The best throwers at the European champions were Alex Duschebajew and Ángel Fernández Pérez, each with five goals. Czech playmaker Ondrej Zdrahala, the top scorer of the 2018 European Championship, met eight times. Goalkeeper Tomás Mrkva from Bundesliga club Bergischer HC also towered over with his team, but was unable to prevent the clear defeat despite numerous brilliant saves.

Only at the beginning of the game did the Czech Republic lead twice for a short time, afterwards Spain got better and went off with two or three goals. The reigning European champion led the break with five goals. In the second half, a series with five goals in a row provided an interim ten-goal lead and the preliminary decision.

The victory is currently enough for the championship lead, but Croatia or Austria could pull past the Spaniards after their encounter from 6.15 p.m. Germany will play the final game of the first day of the main round against Belarus from 8.30 p.m. (SPIEGEL live ticker, TV: ARD). However, the DHB selection stands at zero points before the match. Christian Prokop’s team lost 26:33 to Spain in the preliminary round.
