The top 3:
1. Federica Brignone (It) 2: 21.15
1. Petra Vlhova (Slk) same time
3. Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) +0.01
A race can hardly go off scarce. Three women within a hundredth, crazy. Goddess Fortuna is on the side of Brignone and Vlhova. Shiffrin, on the other hand, is very unlucky.
Wendy Holdener: 4th place (+0.38). Great performance of the Schwyzerin! After third place in Courchevel, she achieved her second best giant result ever. Important, because it will get many start list points and can still start in the top 7. It seems that Holdener is almost freer in this discipline than in slalom. Because the expectations are not that big?
Michelle Gisin: 16th place (+2.80). It was not her day. Already in the first run not much fits together and in the second run it doesn’t get any better. Is she a bit tired after the Mammut program? Gisin to SRF: «I am not yet sufficiently stable in giant slalom. There are passages where I am completely in the reeds. But you shouldn’t forget that I don’t have as many top classifications in this discipline – I have to see it as a learning process. »
Andrea Ellenberger: 21st place (+3.38). 24th place in the morning. Then the Nidwalderin can improve. Admittedly, the ranking does not lead to cheers. But because Ellenberger recently struggled with well-known back problems, that’s a good result. «The second was the better run, I slid less. I’ll take that with me for the next races. I rate this result very positively. »
Lara Gut-Behrami: 23rd place (+3.69). In the first run at rank 25, she cannot release the handbrake in the second round. It lacks the playful, the lively, the sensitive. The Ticino woman will not be satisfied with this – she is stagnating in the giant slalom.
Three of the seven Swiss women fail in the first run: Aline Danioth (38th, +3.01), Simone Wild (42nd, +3.27) and Mélanie Meillard (43rd, +3.29).
That was something to talk about:
Only two victories in the last ten races. US star Mikaela Shiffrin is in a mini crisis – at least by her standards. It is particularly bitter that this time she is doing almost everything right – but luck is missing. Kind of typical.
Perfect conditions in Piedmont: pure sun, imperial weather and a hard, compact piste. The route is easy, the gradient is not too big.
There is a very special race on Sunday: a parallel giant slalom. It will be interesting to see how the ski women will tackle this.
