Edinson Cavani wants to leave Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window, but an offer from Atletico Madrid has been declined, said sports director Leonardo.

International Uruguay missed Sunday’s 1-0 Coupe de France 1-0 victory in Lorient, and Ligue 1’s 4-1 victory in Monaco last Wednesday, with the official PSG line being injured.

However, speaking after the victory over Lorient, Leonardo confirmed that Cavani asked to leave and indicated him Les Parisiens are now waiting for an acceptable offer from Athletes.

“We’ve always said the same thing about Edinson – let’s hope it stays,” said the Brazilian of the PSG’s all-time top scorer. “The reality is that he asked to leave.

“We are studying the situation. We received an offer from Atletico Madrid, it was not accepted, it did not correspond to the value of the player.

“The most important thing is everyone’s desire. We have to be clear – the player wants to go.”

Leonardo cited the Ligue 1 giants’ respect for Cavani as the main reason behind them reluctantly to arouse interest and refuted the idea that PSG has in mind an amount that would be acceptable to Cavani.

“We have to think clearly,” he said. “We never asked for a specific sum. Everyone talks about it, but we never set a value because the most important thing is everyone’s desire. We have to be clear – Edinson wants to leave,” he said.

Speaking at the post-game press conference in Lorient, PSG manager Thomas Tuchel said he was unsure whether Cavani will remain a member of his team later this month.

“I don’t know if Edinson will be here in February,” he said. “We don’t know what will happen tomorrow, anything can happen.

“You want to discuss it, but I don’t. You can talk to Leonardo about it – these are not questions for me. I can talk to you about the next game or training.”
