Erling Haaland saved Borussia Dortmund from a bitter setback in the title fight during his fabulous debut in the Bundesliga. The 19-year-old Norwegian gave BVB 5: 3 (1: 2) victory in a turbulent game at FC Augsburg on Saturday after replacing him with three goals. When the young winter transfer came on in the 56th minute, Augsburg had led 3-1.
Dortmund thus moved past FC Schalke 04 to fourth place on matchday 18 and is tied with the Munich team before FC Bayern’s Sunday game at Hertha BSC. Leading RB Leipzig were four points behind BVB before the RB evening game against Union Berlin.
In the table cellar Werder Bremen ended its descent with a 1-0 (0-0) at Fortuna Düsseldorf and again passed the direct rival to relegation rank. Eintracht Frankfurt also celebrated three points with the 2-1 (1-0) win at 1899 Hoffenheim for the first time since the beginning of November and moved up to eleventh. 1. FC Köln made it 3: 1 (2: 0) against VfL Wolfsburg, their fourth win in a row. Mainz 05 slipped to 15th place due to the 1: 2 (0: 2) against SC Freiburg.
Erling Haaland turns game – Werder is lucky
BVB already had several good options without their new wonder boy Haaland. The home side scored the first goal. Florian Niederlechner (34th minute) scored after a counterattack. Marco Richter raised in the first minute of the game after the restart (46.). Julian Brandt (49.) raised BVB hopes with his goal, but Niederlechner (55.) punished Dortmund’s defenses.
But then Haaland came – and it only took three minutes to his premier goal. Less than two minutes later, Jadon Sancho (61.) equalized in a crazy game in which Haaland had already scored the decisive punch with his second goal (72.) and the Dortmund football afternoon with goal number three (79.) crowned.
Klaus Allofs watched the game of his ex-clubs in Düsseldorf. In 1991 he was responsible for the last Werder success at Fortuna with two goals. The game, characterized by fear of relegation, was ultimately decided by an unfortunate Düsseldorf player. Goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier steered a header from Niklas Moisander (67.) into his own goal. In a turbulent stoppage time, the scorer saw yellow-red (90. + 7) after a fight.
Freiburg plays ice cold, Wolfsburg makes Cologne easy
Eintracht Frankfurt competed in Sinsheim with goalkeeper Kevin Trapp and the back four practiced in the training camp. Bas Dost acted as a forward striker and the Dutchman showed his quality as a striker at the top goal (18th). Filip Kostic hit the crossbar (27th). The Frankfurt could have led higher. Timothy Chandler (62.) scored to win for the superior guests after Konstantinos Stafylidis (48.) equalized.
The SC Freiburg used Mainz defense negligence ice cold. Chang-Hoon Kwon (28th) and Nils Petersen (41st), who with his 84th goal for Freiburg are now the only club record shooter in front of national coach Joachim Löw (83), demonstrated the effectiveness of the Breisgauers. Jean-Philipp Mateta (82nd) could only shorten.
In front of Lukas Podolski, 1. FC Köln was formally invited by VfL Wolfsburg to score goals. Jhon Cordoba hit with a header (23rd) and increased after a fatal mistake by Marcel Tisserand (45th + 2) shortly before the break. Jonas Hector (62.) even increased to 3: 0. Renato Steffens (66th) goal no longer used Wolfsburg.
