Bartomeu: «Xavi will one day coach Barça»

Josep Maria Bartomeu showed again on Wednesday an important lack of tact in assuring, just two days after fulminating Ernesto Valverde and hiring Quique Setién, that “Xavi will one day coach Barça.” «Xavi is very capable. He is a person who perfectly understands our football, has a huge desire and one day he will be, but now Quique Setién is, »said the president of the Barça club during an interview with the newspaper ‘Sport’ on Wednesday.

Xavi, current coach of Al-Sadd Qatari, refused to become a coach of Barcelona to replace Valverde after the club offered him the post, after the defeat suffered Thursday against Atletico in the Spanish Super Cup. However, Bartomeu is convinced that, sooner rather than later, the legendary Barca midfielder will reach the club bench of his life.

According to the top culé leader, the arrival of Setién does not mean closing the way to Xavi, remembering that “Barça’s door is open to many”. «But now we have a coach, which is Quique Setién. He has signed for two and a half seasons and I have already explained that there are elections in 2021 and there will be a clause there according to which, if the new president wants to change the coach, he can change Setién’s contract. But he has signed for two and a half seasons, ”Bartomeu insisted, hoping that the new coach“ will do very well, because he has come forward and will continue with philosophy and game systems. ”

«Anyway Ernesto Valverde has done a magnificent job in these two and a half years. We thank you for the work, the successes, the titles, your way of being, your mood, your professionalism and, above all, your intelligence. But it was time to give the team a new boost, ”he said.
