Arminia Bielefeld swears by the miracle after the success against Bochum, wants to go to the Bundesliga with power. The team does not feel pressure. “Others have to get up, we can,” says trainer Neuhaus.

AWhen Arminia Bielefeld’s team said goodbye to their fans in the wind, rain and temperatures just above freezing, there was actually a little euphoria. The fans sang from the First League – and Fabian Klos and Andreas Voglsammer, the two scorers of the second division table leader, first leaned in front of the fans and then each other.

“If we continue to improve our performance, these promotional dreams are justified,” said Voglsammer, who, with his tenth goal of the season, initiated the 2-0 (1-0) victory of the East Westphalia team over VfL Bochum. His striker partner Fabian Klos then made the first win in the new year perfect with his 14th goal.

It was not, of course, a treat that the Arminen came up with. But that was not the point. “It was a really tough job,” says Voglsammer: “It is all the more important that we won this game. The other teams will surely have looked there too and may think that they will do their part. ”

Arminia Bielefeld’s renaissance began with Neuhaus

It was a statement that the surprise leader made at the beginning of the year and should be understood as a message to the competition. The well-known pursuers, HSV and VfB Stuttgart, should know that the best second division team of 2019 also wants to continue to score in 2020: Bielefeld has agreed to do everything possible to achieve the promotion – no matter how the rival’s sporting and economic opportunities may be much greater.

Uwe Neuhaus already had a good feeling about the determination to achieve this goal before kick-off on Tuesday. “The whole preparation was just as good as last summer. It was clear that we have a goal and that we will not give away our starting position lightly, ”said the trainer, who started the Bielefeld Renaissance on December 10, 2018. Within a few months, the 60-year-old led the team to play offensive football, the features of which are both longer pass passages and a quick switch. The latter was already recognizable on Tuesday – but the former was rather rare.

This was also due to the fact that leading the table was initially a certain burden for the team. Since Bielefeld, who had long felt comfortable in the slipstream of top favorite HSV, climbed to the top on matchday 15, they have not won a game – until Tuesday. “We had to get used to it,” admitted Neuhaus: “And even against Bochum, the team was definitely nervous.” This was at the expense of game control. However, the Bielefeld team could rely on their solid defense with the two central defenders Amos Pieper, who was contracted by Borussia Dortmund, and the Swede Joakim Nilsson, who was also brought in last summer – especially on their outstanding striker duo Klos / Voglsammer.

Bielefeld, which has been debt-free for a year and a half thanks to a merger of regional companies, appears to be well prepared for the promotion race. Your biggest plus over the competition is the homogeneity and a team spirit that is beyond any doubt. “It really pissed us off how we ended the old year, and in preparation we decided not to give up our current position,” said Stefan Ortega. The goalkeeper had been wooed by Leverkusen, where he was to be number two behind Lukas Hradecky. He decided to stay with Arminia and extended for two years. In addition, the pressure in Bielefeld is significantly lower than in Hamburg and Stuttgart. “Others have to ascend – we can,” said Neuhaus.
