Chakib Lachgar He has been in Gipuzkoa for more than ten years. He arrived in May 2008 from a small town in Morocco. It was not easy for him to make the decision to leave Ouargui, "a small town just 100 kilometers from Marrakech." And less knowing that he did it on the underside of a truck. Now, more than a decade later, this man who continues to have Moroccan nationality has imposed himself after a tremendous comeback in the edition of the centenary of the Behobia – San Sebastián.
«I was 18 when I left Morocco. I came under a truck. It was dangerous and difficult to forget, ”says Chakib Lachgar. «The thought in the area where I live is to reach Europe. It is the objective. Although the truth is that my mind did not go there. I started with 16 years to work. After finishing school I went to Sahara to find my life and I was also in Tangier. I worked in a greengrocer, in the textile, bricklayer and, above all, pastry chef … ».
«I started to get interested in how people traveled to Europe. The time for adventure had arrived. A lot of money is needed to ride a patera and I ended up on the bottom of the truck. My intention was to go to Germany, Stockholm … », says this man born in 1989 and who came to wear the shirt of the Royal Society that, not only stands out on the road, also on the track.
Before arriving in Gipuzkoa in May 2008, Lachgar spent three months in Murcia. «A friend called me and told me he was in a juvenile center. I was in Tolosa and then in an apartment in Villabona. The association 'Kolore Guztiak' was the one that helped me»Points. «I had already worked on it, but I did welding and pastry courses. I was internship in Lekuona and I stayed working for about a year. I already had the necessary papers to stay. But with the crisis I could not continue ».
At that time, of course, athletics did not even touch him. «I haven't done any sports since I left school. I discovered athletics with twelve. When I ran I noticed that I felt better ». Lachgar, whose youth coincided with the magical years of his compatriot Hicham El Guerrouj, was undoubtedly an athlete. «It was what it was worth. In 2003 I went to a national cross for the first time ».
Lachgar had to make the difficult decision to get away from his family. His return to athletics, his true foray beyond his school years, was late. «After finishing working in the bakery I went to Frankfurt. There he had a friend who always watched athletics races on his television ». He remembered his past and threw himself: "I was also running," he said. He started going out with him. At 22, Lachgar felt again what it was like to run. «I did a mountain test in Germany and I was second in my category».
After passing through the Germanic country and a few weeks in Belgium, the athlete returned to Gipuzkoa, to Irun. «I spent six months doing internships at the Ogitxu pastry shop». He began training in September 2011 with Ricardo Jiménez, a coach with whom he worked out. His first club was Atlético San Sebastián and his first race, the Irún cross. He now resides in Rentería and already knows what it is to win the Behobia-San Sebastián.
