MWith a convincingly convincing performance, FC Augsburg has won the perhaps groundbreaking basement duel against SC Paderborn and gained some air in the table cellar. The team of coach Martin Schmidt defeated the Ostwestfalen on Saturday not undeserved 1-0 (1-0) and now has six points ahead of the bottom, three on the 1st FC Cologne and one on the FSV Mainz 05 on the relegation place.
Philipp Max (41.) scored in front of 13,758 spectators in Paderborn the winning goal for the FCA, who finished a series of six games without a win. Rising Paderborn threatens now relatively early in the season to lose the connection.
The hosts caught the better start and made pressure at the beginning. Augsburg initially withdrew. The team coached by coach Steffen Baumgart, who had been coaching intensively on the sidelines, had almost taken advantage of this early on: FCA's Stephan Lichtsteiner added Raphael Framberger in an awkward encounter with Streli Mamba in the penalty area, taking the striker off his feet Referee Marco Fritz pointed to the point. SCP captain Klaus Gjasula grabbed the ball, stepped on, but failed with a small penalty to Augsburg keeper Tomas Koubek (7).
But Paderborn continued to search the way forward. Gerrit Holtmann played the agile Mamba free, but the 25-year-old could not control the ball free from Koubek (12).
It took half an hour before the guests came dangerously in front of the opponent's goal. Florian Niederlechner had the FCA lead twice within 60 seconds. First he shot for a cross from the half-field exactly Paderborn goalkeeper Leopold Zingerle, then he aimed at it from half-left position clearly over it.
Both teams now delivered a balanced game, which became increasingly rough. Intense and hard-fought duels shaped the action. Significantly, the Augsburg lead resulted in a free-kick: Max scored the ball worth seeing – or not? The ball bounced so strangely back from a camera into the field that there was confusion briefly in the stadium. Then it was clear: everything was regular, the gate counted.
The hit gave the guests extra security. Augsburg developed an overweight and had the chance to increase: Ruben Vargas failed with a touch but on Zingerle (53.). The effort was not denied to the hosts in the second half, but more than a free kick by Abdelhamid Sabiri (69) and a long-range shot by Sven Michel (71 ') did not make it past the SCP. Both chances thwarted Koubek.
