Wallabies prop Taniela Tupou has been attacked outside the team's hotel in South Africa.

A Wallabies spokesman confirmed that a player was the victim of a "snatch and run" less than 50 yards from where the team resides in Central Sandton, just off Johannesburg before their Rugby Championship opens on Saturday (Sunday, NZ time) .

The Sydney Morning Herald understands Tupou – dubbed the tanan Thor for his schoolboy rugby feats in Auckland – was the player targeted.

The 135kg front robber was 50m from the hotel when a man grabbed his mobile phone and ran into a waiting vehicle.
