Bad news for the CCC team. Alessandro De Marchi suffered a huge crash during the 9th stage of the Tour de France 2019. Severely hit, the Italian rider was forced to give up.
The Italian of the CCC team Alessandro De Marchi left the Tour de France on Sunday after having dropped from the start of the 9th stage starting from Saint-Etienne, announced the organizers. "He has a deep laceration in his face" but "Is totally conscious"said the Italian team, transported to the hospital to do exams.
De Marchi, named the most combative rider of the Tour 2014, had led the 8th stage on Saturday by starting a breakaway, competing for a long time with the Belgian Thomas De Gendt before being unable to follow the future winner of the stage.
The 33-year-old rider fell Sunday in the first few meters of the stage, and was forced to retire, leaving his CCC team to six out of eight riders. This one had indeed wiped the first abandonment of this edition: its New Zealand runner Patrick Bevin had not taken the departure of the 6th stage because of fractured ribs.
