The 27-kilometer Tour de France time trial in Pau has been much less decisive than previously thought. The differences between the yellow candidates have been minimal (the most affected have been the Colombians Bernal and Quintana) and it has been a non-specialist, Julian Alaphilippe who has taken the stage.
The cyclist of the Deceuninck-Quick Step who arrived in yellow and had declared that he believed that he could maintain the lead in the time trial has surprised everyone by beating Thomas's time at the finish line. During the whole course he was shown between 4 and 7 seconds faster and taking advantage of the hard final slope he has increased the difference to 15 seconds.
Now with one minute and twenty six seconds of difference with respect to the INEOS leader, the question is whether he will be able to withstand the five remaining high mountain stages.
