Real Madrid Came to blows during pre-season in 2006
On August 1, 2006, Fabio Capello was delighted with how Real Madrid had trained during their first training session of the day in Irdning, Austria, but the same could not be said for the afternoon session.
Los Blancos were preparing to for their fourth friendly of pre-season, against Reggina in Graz, yet the session was characterised by an incident between Thomas Gravesen and Robinho. The Dane was overly aggressive during training, even receiving a warning from Capello, but that afternoon it was Robinho who lost his cool with the central midfielder. A skill from the Brazilian was met with a kick by Gravesen. Robinho went straight towards him and, despite the clear difference in stature between the two, threw a punch towards Gravesen‘s face. The midfielder was ready to fight the forward, but Sergio Ramos pulled Robinho away while David Beckham and Raul Gonzalez took Gravesen.
Capello expelled them both from training, with Robinho leaving the pitch with his finger to his temple and making a gesture that could only be interpreted in one way: “He’s crazy.”
Between the jokes and provocations, that was Gravesen‘s final pre-season in Madrid as he joined Celtic on August 30.
