Cardiff Blues joining the man voted the Welsh rugby's hottest new talent last season

Cardiff Blues has tied one of the hottest young prospects in Welsh rugby after Ben Thomas signed his first professional deal with the region.

Thomas highlighted Cardiff RFC last season and scored 10 tries in 19 appearances on the way to being voted Premiership's Newcomer of the Season at the end of the season bash.

The 20-year-old was also called the Cardiff Blues Academy Player of the Season, and there is plenty of excitement in the region about the talent they have on their hands.

"Ben is another young player who has been rewarded with a chance to further develop his rugby training at Cardiff Blues for some impressive forms in both our A-program and Cardiff RFC," said Blues boss John Mulvihill.

"We look forward to working closely with him in all areas, both on and off the field, to ensure his future success.

"This is the start of a very bright future and we are sure that Ben has the right skills, talent and character to succeed at the next level."

Thomas has reaped the benefits of learning from former Wales international Gethin Jenkins and T Rhys Thomas, who are both involved with the regional A side and the Cardiff RFC side.

He saw last season for his strong but eerie, ongoing style, his handling skills and reach.

Being able to play a number of positions, including the center and the half of the flight, makes him an exciting package.

"It's a dream that's right to sign my first senior contract at Cardiff Blues," Thomas said.

"It is my home team I have come through this series, I have grown up looking at the arms park, especially when there was Jamie Roberts, Leigh Halfpenny and Casey Laulala.

"Now I'm just looking forward to putting my hand up for selection. Premiership and Celtic Cup have put me in good shape and helped build my confidence and skill set. I've also spent the last two years training with the senior match and feeling that I can now step up.

"I just want to push to break into the championship team and get some prime time – I've already learned a great deal from being in and around the senior environment.

"Seeing what Owen Lane and Jarrod Evans have achieved gives me the confidence to kick in and play with such a young and talented group developing together is also a tremendously exciting perspective."
