Rome – Roger Federer, injured in the right leg, was forced to forfeit Friday before the quarter-final of the Masters 1000 in Rome, which was to oppose the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, announced the ATP.
"I am not 100% physical and after discussions with my team, it was decided that I will not play", said the Swiss, according to a message communicated by the ATP.
"I am disappointed that I can not play today. Rome has always been one of my favorite cities and I hope to come back next year", added the former world N.1.
Federer announced late last week its participation in the tournament in Rome, where he had not returned since 2016.
He will have played only one day at Foro Italico on Thursday with two games played and won, the rain fell Wednesday have increased the program.
The Swiss at the 20 Grand Slams first beat Portuguese Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-3 before a much more complicated round of 16 against Croatian Borna Coric.
Federer had to fight more than two and a half hours and save a match point to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9/7).
Tsitsipas will face Rafael Nadal or Fernando Verdasco on Saturday for a place in the final.
